Pilgrimage of Awakening is the first biography of the Rogers. Arriving in India after World War II afire with religious zeal, the Reverend Murray Rogers and his wife, Mary, are rocked by the collision of Eastern and Western values. The handsome young couple from England's upper crust, raised with nannies and educated at finishing schools and Cambridge, uproot their children to live a life in solidarity with India's poorest. They seize the challenge of life in Gandhi's Sevagram, then found their own small Christian ashram. Interacting with spiritual leaders on the religious world stage, Murray, the magnetic young Anglican priest, becomes a pioneer in interfaith dialogue. The couple embraces strands of Hinduism and Buddhism in their life pilgrimage across boundaries of culture and faith in India, Jerusalem, Hong Kong, and Canada. As they "rock the boat" institutionally, their spiritual pilgrimage and awakening sparks both controversy and awakening in countless others. Pilgrimage of Awakening is the intimate unfolding of their joyful and painful spiritual transformation within their small community as they raise their three children. Tensions of their dual callings to marriage and family and to dedicated religious life interweave to create a movingly human and sacred story.

This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in what can be done to make the world a better place. It is actually a love story about an Anglican priest and his wife, whose love for each other allowed them to be partners as they dedicated their lives to loving God and their neighbors as themselves, with the ultimate goal of world peace. Mindful of the tensions that over the centuries have driven the world's religions apart, if not to war, many of us share that goal. However, what makes the Rogers' story different is how hard and how consistently they worked at it. They lived in a number of communities around the globe, where they were deeply affected by the religious traditions and sought to integrate the different perspectives on God into a sense of underlying unity. Everywhere they lived, they loved and were loved and will surely not soon be forgotten. As a close personal friend of the Rogers and a meticulous researcher, Mary Cattan has written their story with a combination of authority and empathy that should not be missed.

Pilgrimage of Awakening The Extraordinary Lives of Murray and Mary Rogers Mary V T Cattan Klaus K Klostermaier 9781498279093 Books Reviews

This is an elegantly written book. Cattan seamlessly weaves interviews and narrative to bring to the fore the profound story of Murray and Mary Rodgers. I found this a fascinating and enlightening read and was moved by the life-long devotion and commitment of this couple.
The author has woven the journey of this remarkable couple into a book that reads like a novel. The meticulous research that is so evident includes descriptions of the current geo political setting in the countries, regions and towns in which they lived as well as descriptions of the personal challenges and successes faced by Murray and Mary Rogers. One often feels as if the author were physically present as she describes what was going on in their personal lives and their interaction with a wide variety of friends and colleagues. The ability of Murray and Mary to remain steadfast and true to their beliefs should be an inspiration for any reader.
This story is fascinating on so many levels- in telling the story of two young, idealistic Christian missionaries, Cattan seamlessly weaves together spirituality, geopolitics, history, and psychology in a story that trumped my expectations over and over again. As they elect to live among the poorest of the poor in rural India, Murray and Mary Rogers originally intend to convert Hindus to Christianity, but find instead that they are slowly transformed by their Hindu and Muslim neighbors, allowing for profound inter-faith connections to flourish throughout their lives. Again and again, the Rogers demonstrate the radical growth that can happen when one has the courage and integrity to question one's own assumptions. The story follows the pair through their lifetimes as they move from continent to continent, incorporating the political and cultural forces at work in each place. Over time, Murray becomes increasingly radical and outspoken in his views, challenging comfortable Christians about what it means to live out the teachings of Christ.

The author has researched her subjects' lives exhaustively, yet this book possesses the narrative drive of a novel. I felt privy to private details of the Rogers' personal and spiritual lives, including the depth of the struggles and personal sacrifices both Mary and Murray Rogers made to live out their Christian ideals. I was especially intrigued by the psychological insights the author brings to her portrayal of this remarkable couple.

This book has important lessons to teach about forging cross-cultural and interfaith connections, and the process through which the "other" becomes fully humanized and cherished.
This book has been very appropriately named. In reading it we also may be awakened to the Journey to and in the Ultimate Loving Mystery...one of whose names is God. The lives of Murray, Mary and Heather are presented through transparent revelations of their life pilgrimage with its "stations" of discovery in England, India, Jerusalem, Hong Kong and Canada...all to and in this Ultimate Loving Mystery.
